Episode 223 – “The Invasion” – Part 03

Back again with Vaughn and Packer!

“Calling Dick Tracy! Calling Dick Tracy!”

Packer is quite the slimeball, isn’t he? Vaughn is more of that polite sort of Bondian-style villain, but Packer’s just a jerk.

Not a tremendous amount happens in this episode, though it still manages to entertain. There are many scenes of the Doctor and Jamie running from the bad guys, an enjoyable dialogue with Vaughn, and an exciting escape up an elevator shaft.

And…that’s really about it. Not much else happens here.

It Began in a Junkyard

53 years ago tonight, Doctor Who aired its first episode. No one paid attention, mind you, because news of the Kennedy assassination was foremost in people’s minds. Nevertheless, it was an important broadcast.

It’s hard to believe just how long the show has been on the air and how much material has been produced. Hundreds upon hundreds of TV episodes, dozens of novels, comic books, and comic strips, video games, a pinball machine, and, of course, probably around a thousand Doctor Who-based Big Finish stories.

It’s been a heck of a ride, and with luck, I’ll still be watching it, enjoying it, and writing about it 47 years from now when the show turns 100.

A Brief Rest

I’m taking one. Why? Because for the last several days, work has been very, very busy, and I’ve had no energy to do anything once I get home.

This rest is temporary, I assure you. By Saturday, at the latest, I expect to be back on the air. I’m not going to work that day, regardless of what’s going on at my job. So we have that to look forward to.

But in the meantime…

Hey, at least I didn’t use the shower screencap.

State of the Art(icles)

Ok, so. It’s been over a week now since I last watched and posted on an episode. In my defense, I’ve been busy, though that isn’t much of a defense, and doesn’t stop me from feeling like I’ve made someone unhappy.

At this rate, I won’t get to him until 2023.

Here’s what’s really going on: I hate the reconstructions. I’m sorry, but I do. And I have three more from this story, plus six in the next story. That’s 9 episodes out of the next 10 that exist only in reconstruction form.

Now I knew going in that there were going to be a lot of reconstructions, and I knew that I probably wouldn’t like them. but I had no idea just how hard it was going to be to deal with them, especially since, due to technical issues, I can no longer stream directly to my TV, as I used to.

So I think what’s going to happen is this: I’m going to finish off “The Faceless Ones”, and then that’s it for reconstructions. I’m done with them.

But! I won’t skip them entirely. I do need a break from them, and a very, very long break, but I can’t skip out completely. So what I’m going to do is, after each Doctor’s time is up, I’ll go back and watch whichever the next Second Doctor story I skipped is. I’ll finish “The Faceless Ones” starting tomorrow, and then after the Second Doctor’s last episode, I’ll watch “Evil of the Daleks”, and then after “Planet of Spiders”, I’ll watch whatever the next reconstruction is. Etc.

Yes, this will take a while, but I really do believe it’s the only way I’m going to get through this.

I confess, I haven’t been around much lately. I’ve been quite sick, and working on some other projects. But don’t worry! I haven’t forgotten this project. I’ll be back to this tomorrow! Thanks for your patience.

Resting now, but back in action soon!

The Upcoming Schedule

I’ve finished the First Doctor’s era, so now I’m going to be a bit lazy before we move on.

But don’t worry. He’ll be along soon.

In the meantime, I will, sometime in the next couple of days, watch and reflect upon the “classic” movie, Dr. Who and the Daleks. After that, I’ll move on to Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD, and we’ll finish up with An Adventure in Space and Time.

I’m not sure yet if I’ll watch these things in two parts, or just go for it. We shall see. But once we’re done with them, we’re off to the Second Doctor!
