This is an interesting case. This story is quite good, and very much of a proper science-fiction story. But in reconstruction format, it’s nearly unwatchable, which is a great shame.
There really is a lot to like here. The whole “good sexy, evil ugly!” trope is one that continues in sci-fi even now. It was dated as hell back in the day, which is why it’s gratifying to see that Doctor Who took it on directly back in the 1960s.
The Chumblies were cute, too, and there were some wonderfully well-done scenes with our heroes. Even the bad gals got some fun times. The sets were all fairly interesting and inventive, too.
But…this story really suffers from the fact that three-fourths of it is missing. The recons that I have were well-done video-wise, but it was soooooo hard to hear anything that anyone was saying, especially in the second and fourth episodes. That was a serious problem.
It’s a shame. There’s an excellent story here, and I really hope that at some point the BBC finds a way to present it to us in a better fashion.
